It's always good to get education wherever you can find it.

I should always try to be open-minded enough to learn from other artists' methods.

As for my profession, I'm the "computer guy" for a signshop that designs and fabricates architectural signage. I spend most of my working day with computer graphics and automated sign making equipment, which is why I prefer the traditional arts when I get home. I've always been a sign-maker, but I miss the days before the computer took over, when I was a sign-painter.

I love your gallery. You are quite talented. I'm guessing you're an artist for your profession?

If you ever have the chance, try doing a Bob Ross inspired painting. It is much more freeing than any of the other procedural techniques because you just make things up as you go. Kinda like that painting you did titled "Spontaneous Painting" Just a fun suggestion.

Oh, no, I don't take any of it as hurtful. I agree with you on never using a certain style all the time. Most artists got famous because they centered on one technique, and I also think this lacks creativity. I could never paint the same way over and over again.
but when you have to explain art to someone who is not an artist, you have to use procedural steps. They just don't understand it otherwise.
And I do think I learned more by drawing him. But at the same time I've picked up many tricks to oil painting from him.

Well said. You DO have a diverse gallery, and I agree that versatility is important.

I liked Bob Ross, and his voice was calm and soothing. I'm sure he inspired many, many people to express themselves in paint, people who otherwise would never have done so. That is a valuable thing, and time well spent. He seemed sincere, and that's worth more than just about anything.

But the art! That procedural same-after-same painting style of his is hard for me to look at. It looks particularly tiresome to me these days because I recently was commissioned to reproduce two Thomas Kinkade paintings, which are similar in their technique and approach. I reproduced them faithfully, and I tried to keep an open mind. I sometimes learn much from copying a painter who has a very different style from my own. But my overwhelming impression of Kinkade? His approach was one that spurns naturalistic observation in favor of memorized short-cuts in paint. I finished the work, got paid, and headed straight outside to draw REAL trees and things, to get the taste of mindless procedure out of my head. It seemed the furthest thing from honest artistic endeavor. Seeing things as you wish to see things may make for assertive politics, but it seems like the polar opposite from what I consider the principal aims of art: to seek truth, and to convey that truth as well as you can.

I'm sorry I said anything at all about your Bob Ross drawing; it may have been out of line. Please know I mean no disrespect to you, or your art. I'm just trying to explain myself, that's all.
~pntrdan:iconpntrdan: Nov 5, 2007, 5:35:32 PM
Yes, normally for most mediums, one step-by-step technique does not cover all the possibilities of making a piece. Yet, the only way for Bob to paint so fast was to do a wet on wet technique. Also when you think about it, he really had no plan to his paintings, he just made them up as he went. The technique was mainly to simplify painting.

But yeah, I don't use his techniques but I have picked up some useful tips from him. I think mastery of multiple forms of Art shows that you are a truly talented. That's why my gallery is so diverse. I like to try new things.

Thanks for adding my drawing to favorites.

I was just looking at the Bob Ross picture of yours.

Mr. Ross was a kind soul and God bless him, but in my opinion, you probably learned more from sketching his smiling face than you might have done by following his formulaic procedures.

If you're a fan of those procedures, please forgive me for saying so. It's only my own opinion.
